VETERINARY TEAM UTILIZATION GUIDE

Chapter 3: Human Resources: The Most Important Asset

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are becoming increasingly essential in veterinary medicine. Historically, the industry has struggled with a lack of diversity—particularly among veterinarians—but that is beginning to change. DEI efforts are helping create more inclusive, innovative, and effective teams, ultimately enhancing the experience for both staff and clients.

Human Resources plays a central role in advancing DEI within veterinary practices. This includes developing inclusive job postings, training to address unconscious bias, and regularly reviewing pay practices to ensure equity. Practices should also assess hiring and promotion processes to attract diverse candidates and support fair, meaningful career advancement once they’re on the team.

However, DEI also plays a critical role in team utilization and efficiency. When employees feel psychologically safe, respected, and valued, they’re more likely to fully engage in their roles, take initiative, and stretch their capabilities. Inclusive cultures remove the invisible barriers that prevent people from stepping up, speaking up, or being cross-trained effectively. Equity ensures every team member—regardless of background—has access to the same opportunities for growth and contribution. The result? A fully activated team where talent isn’t left on the table.

Creating a true sense of belonging goes beyond hiring. It can involve forming employee resource groups, recognizing inclusive holidays, and offering safe spaces for open dialogue. It also means ensuring that training, coaching, and stretch assignments are equally distributed to support individual and team development. When team members know they can show up as themselves and still be respected, they’re far more likely to contribute their best work, collaborate seamlessly, and take ownership of outcomes.

Most importantly, DEI should be seen not as a one-time initiative but as an ongoing commitment to building a workplace where every team member feels seen, respected, and empowered to grow. And that empowerment, when equitably supported, becomes a driving force behind better resource utilization, stronger performance, and more efficient, cohesive teams.

When practices embrace diversity and inclusion, they become better equipped to serve a broad range of pet owners while fostering a high-functioning team built on mutual respect, shared purpose, and trust.
